Each and every follower of Jesus Christ is supposed to be a disciple. Discipleship is not reserved for the spiritually elite or the religiously minded, but is a way of life intended for all of us. This means we all become the kind of people who learn how to live from Jesus. This does not happen on accident, and with all the influences in the culture around us we need to be deliberate about learning to hear the truth and wisdom of the Jesus way of life. These materials are designed to give us ways in which we can engage with this learning process and allow God to change the way we live. So, two things are important to clarify as we begin.

First, what do we mean by discipleship?

Primarily we mean this:

Follow Jesus and experience his transforming power

Scripture tells us that God decided what he was going to do with his children a long time ago - turn them into little images of Christ. Romans 8:29 says, "For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son." Jesus said that he came to give us abundant life here on earth. John 10:10 says, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."

Disciples are not perfect; they are people who have decided to learn from Jesus and take on his priorities and values as their own. The author Dallas Willard says, " A disciple is a person who has decided that the most important thing in their life is to learn how to do what Jesus said to do. A disciple is not a person who has things under control, or knows a lot of things. Disciples simply are people who are constantly revising their affairs to carry through on their decision to follow Jesus." The disciple knows that Jesus is at the center of their lives, so they agree with Dietrich Bonhoeffer when he says, "Christianity without the living Christ is inevitably Christianity without discipleship, and Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ."

Secondly, how does this rubric work?

This system is not designed to be a formula or a promise that if you follow it you will experience something dramatic and powerful in "Three Easy Steps!" It is designed to provide some guidance and focus along the way. We often drift in our walk with Christ, and this can help us think and act in new ways as we walk with Christ.

We have taken the Great Commandment and broken it down into ways you are able to fulfill each part of the command. This is not exhaustive, but it is suggestive and helpful. If Christ commanded us to love God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength there ought to be very real ways of doing that. Additionally, if we are to love our neighbor as ourselves, the same thing applies.

This is designed for you to select one of those options (the links to the left) and follow the course we have suggested. Each course is broken up into the same three sections:

  • Here Is What We Mean (definition)
  • Here Are Some Scriptures (scriptural basis)
  • Here Are Some Ways To Do It  (practical application)

We pray this is useful to you and encouraging in your walk with Christ! And we firmly believe that a disciple who learns to walk and live in the ways given to us in Scripture will begin to experience the power of God both in and through their lives.

God bless!
